| | Bali Surfing Bali was the first Island in Indonesia where the surf culture took hold. It was also the first place in Indonesia where modern surfing was experienced, and as a result it has the most well establish surf scenes not only in Indonesia, or South East Asia, but the whole world. Walking through the lanes around Poppies 2 in Kuta, and you'll think you've just walked into a Blue Crush film set. Tanned surfer dudes are everywhere, bikini clad surf chicks are everywhere too. Then there's the local beach boys who spend all day just hanging out and ripping up the small surf that fills the bay with beaches like Kuta, Double Six, and Seminyak. Kuta is without doubt the ultimate surf experience in Bali, where you can merge into the actual surf lifestyle that so many short term tourists, long term tourists, locals, and expats have decided to dedicate their lives to. The best time of year for Kuta beaches is during the dry season of May to September, where the local trade winds blow in the favorable offshore direction all day long and groom perfect lined up swells which pulse unremittingly all the way from the big storms in the South Indian Ocean and Roaring Forties during the southern hemisphere winter. A few times a month you'll see the bommie breaking way out to see from Kuta beach, and this is the sign of a very large swell. During these high swells the rip currents, undertow and wave along the beaches get extremely powerful and the best advice is to stay out of the water and wait for the swell to drop a bit the following day. If you fanny a reef experience, then there are plenty of choices around Bali, but the best surfing reef breaks like Uluwatu, Kuta reef, and Bingin, also attract the best surfers and the biggest crowds, and hence a lot of the time it can be quite a battle to even get one wave. The famous Bukit Peninsular has other waves than just Ulus which are all regularly surfed and enjoyed. As you move round the peninsular you come to Geger beach in Nusa Dua, which is another popular spot – a long and powerful right hand reef break that gets surfed more in the wet season because it is then that the wind blows from the west at will make perfect offshore wind conditions for the east facing Nusa Dua breaks. Further up Bali's east coast waves can be found, but the different spots are harder to predict than the reliable surf of Kuta and Uluwatu. One exception is Turtle Island, or Serangan, which has ride able waves almost every day during the wet season. However the reliability comes at a price, and during good surf days, or during the Christmas hols, it is common to count more than 100 surfers spread out over the reef Finally, Nusa Lembongan has to be given a special mention, since this is a true surf paradise with a selection or excellent, fast barreling waves all with close distance of each other, with Bali's towering Gunung Agung in the background.
