| | Seminyak Ever since the foundation of Kuta in Bali as one of South East Asia's prime tourist destinations, it has been ever changing and expanding. About fifteen years ago as the development of Kuta spread west across Legian, the little town of Seminyak was hit by the wave of development and today is Bali's prime entertainment, and hotel and villa spot. When it comes to dining Seminyak tends to cater for the higher end of things. Although there are still many affordable eateries of various origins, Japanese Sushi bars, Italian pizzerias, and Mexican barbeque houses, it still tends to be dominated by classy and romantic a la carte restaurants. There are also many bars and lounges, al featuring modern interiors, sounds, displays and topped with a relaxed, cool, and stylish feel. The nightclubs are famous throughout Bali, and there are many to choose from. Some nightclubs spill out directly on to the beach whilst others are just of the main roads and regularly feature excellent DJs that mix up tunes from across the international dance floor. Seminyak has excellent shopping to offer. The highlights are the diverse array of original and designer boutiques with influences and products from all around the world. There are also some excellent local art and craft shops, and other than Ubud, Seminyak is the next place in Bali to shop for cultural interest, art, sculptures, photography, and instillations. Some famous Indonesian artists such as Chusin Setiadikara and Ugo Untoro can be found working and distributing their works here. Other progressive and as of yet unexposed artists often showcase their work at the art shop Biasa Art Space, which is constantly growing in popularity. As like anywhere in Bali, there are always local temples to be discovered, visited, and awed. Seminyak is no exception, and apart from some mainstream temples like the large black stoned temple found on Jalan Legian just up from Padma, there is also the enigmatic Pura Petitenget temple found at the T-junction on Jalan Petitenget. This temple is considered by Balinese to be one of the nine ‘wild eyes' and is therefore very important to the Balinese, and is believed to protect the island from any threats arriving from the south. The beaches are truly fantastic around Seminyak. They run uninterrupted for over 5 kilometers from the airport of Ngurah Rai, past Kuta beach, past Legian Beach, past Petitenget Beach, all the way to Berawa and Canggu, where the first rocky outcrops start to pop up. The beaches directly opposite Seminyak are however only made up of fine golden sand. The gradient is gradual and there is plenty of beach for lying on and relaxing on. The waters are patrolled and life guarded, and are hence suitable for swimmers. There is also world class surf to be experienced along these beaches, which during the dry season of May to September will regularly serve up excellent surfing conditions as the trade winds groom the incoming Indian Ocean swells. There are other water sports to be tried here too, and recently a bungee jumping platform has been erected overlooking the beach of Double Six.
