Ubud

Ubud has to be noted as one of the great attractions of south East Asia when it comes to scenery, peace, art and culture. It also houses many unique temples, art galleries, and museums. Some real masterpieces have been created over the years by artists who chose to settle permanently or at least temporarily in Ubud, and they are displayed at the local museums and art galleries. Famous works by artists such as Flip Hamers, Willem Hofker, Donald Duck, Louise Koke, and Rudolf Bonnet are but some to be admired. Jalan Raya Ubud is the main road and it where you’ll want to spend your first few hours tasting what is on offer, before heading off towards Jalan Pengosekan, which is found three kilometers west of Ubud.

Tjampuhan is a small village just on the fringe of Ubud where you can find many interesting things and viewing pleasures. Ubud is filled with history and this can be experienced and relived at every step. Museum Rudana established in 1995 holds an outstanding collection of paintings of fine Balinese works of art in both classic Batuan style and Classic Ubud style. Museum Puri Lukisan means the Palace of Paintings and woodcarvings. It is reachable on foot from Jalan Raya Ubud, and has been open to the public since 1956 by the first Indonesian Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs, Mrs. Mohammad Yamin. It is here where the works of Ida Bagus Made Poleng reside – one of Rudolf Bonnet’s most devout students.

Moving on from museums, and it must be mentioned that Bali’s most picturesque paddy fields are to be seen around Ubud. There are also attractions such as the Bali Bird and Reptile Park. This offers entertainment for the children and also education for the adults. It sits in Batubulan on two hectares of beautifully landscaped tropical gardens and contains well over 1000 exotic birds, of which a quarter of that figure are endemic to Indonesia.

There are also approximately 2000 tropical plants plus around 50 varieties of palm tree. The world’s best acclaimed elephant park, Taro Elephant Park, is also on the menu at Ubud. The park is nestled in 3.5 hectares of immaculately pristine tropical parkland and keeps at the time of writing twenty seven Sumatran Elephants. This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact, feed, play with, sit on, ride, take photos of, stare at and learn all about these wonderful creatures. There is even a 15’000 year old wooly mammoth skeleton on display from back when Bali was under the freezing glaciers of the last ice age. The final attraction definitely not to be missed is of course the Ubud Monkey Forest, alternatively named and naturally less often referred to as the Mandala Wisata Wana Wanara sanctuary. There are over 200 long-tailed Macaca Fascicularis, Macaque monkeys living here, which also have made the three temples inside the park their home.
